Aleixandrino Walk

Starting from the town hall square, walk towards the Casa de la Cultura, an example of a traditional mountain house built by José Yáñez Arroyo, a civil engineer who worked for the Madrid Provincial Council, and who was responsible for bringing the water supply to the village.Continue walking along Santa María Street until you reach the beautiful parish church, built in a mixed style but with a predominance of late gothic, representative of the House of Infantado. After leaving the church, head towards Rollo Square where you can see a statue of a “Perrero” in the centre, a legendary figure in the history of Miraflores dating back to the start of the 19th century. Leaving the square, continue on to Mayor Street where you will find the impressive Fuente Nueva.  This fountain was built in 1791.  Here let us remember the poet Vicente Aleixandre’s words in his poem Félix “… and in a fountain which there was in a village / one can still see the date: 1791 …”Continuing along Mayor Street, come to the Madrid road and then walk along the Rascafria road until you reach the turning to Vicente Aleixandre Street. This is where, at number 4, the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, Vicente Aleixandre, lived for many years and where, according to the poet, he had another renaissance, this one to light, to conscious living and poetry.Walk on until you reach the Mirador de la Virgen. From this viewpoint we can also contemplate the imposing figure of the Najarra “…. immense mountain, incalculable pile …” and the Morcuera mountain pass, high above “… a gap / opens up and leads to another plain, now fertile and diverse” from the Aleixandre’s poem The village.

Walk back down to the town until you reach Alamo Square where there is a large, hollow tree trunk, the sad remains of what was once a magnificent poplar tree which dominated all in the village “… the only sky of these men” words written by the poet when the branches were still clad with verdant green leaves
